It started with a mug. Actually, it started a little before that, but never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
I happened to mention I need a mug to take out with me when I’m “working” on the bike, or in the shed—one that won’t break.
Ms Old Pac, bless her heart, said, “Okay, give me the design of your Bonnie and I’ll get you one.” or something along those lines. I have to admit I wasn’t really listening too closely because I was watching Freddie Dobbs on YouTube… need I say more.
Then it turned up, and she was so excited, there was my classic motorbike on a mug instead of a t-shirt. I was more than a little disappointed. The mug was nice enough, but it was a travel mug, or keep cup as the youth call them. I mean, what’s a man to do? I told her it was lovely of course—I mean, happy wife, happy life, right?
Unfortunately Ms Old Pac is smart, and she picked up on my less than ecstatic reaction. She then asked the question that started this great debate – is an enamel mug really best for outside, or wouldn’t a travel mug be better?

Of course I told her the good old tin mug is great for any outside occasion, and perhaps inside too. I mean a man has to have just the right thing for his tea or coffee, right?
She asked what about bugs in your drink, it going cold while you’re distracted, spilling when you’re moving… you get the picture.
I responded with, “Tin mugs are just cool. Best for tea or coffee, and perhaps a little something else too.” I know you guys are all with me here.
We agreed to disagree, sort of. What we actually did was stopped arguing and said we would put it to the social media test, and asked the people following us on Facebook.

It wasn’t looking good for a bit, but then the sensible people weighed in, and of course we all agreed style over function was the way to go.
Just to prove I was right, I took my new tin mug with out with me on the deck, then when I was doing a few little things on the bonnie. Best coffee ever!
PS: Don’t tell the Ms Old Pac, but the travel cup is coming in pretty useful on those train trips in to work 😉
See you in the twisties,
Jim
